Job overview

Convergence of IT (information technology) with medical technologies presents benefits and risks requiring designated responsibilities and specialist skills for optimal adoption and for safe and reliable management of medical devices IT. The post-holder will provide expert specialist advice to the Trust on evaluation, execution, governance, regulatory, engineering / scientific, security and safety matters relating to IT in medical devices and systems.

The scope of medical devices IT is considered to include -

  • independent (non-networked) medical devices & systems (with integral firmware / software);
  • data networked medical devices & systems, (including wired & wireless closed & open networks);
  • medical device data integration with health information systems, (eg: EPR, PACS, etc.);
  • stand-alone software as medical devices

Main duties of the job

The key elements of this role are -

  • The post-holder will act as executive lead on the Trust’s multi-disciplinary Medical Devices IT Group, with remit to ensure a coordinated, integrated approach to medical devices IT planning, implementation, compliance and management across the organisation.
  • The post-holder will also be engaged in the Clinical Engineering department’s operational and innovation activities, serving in an advisory and support role for medical equipment management activities, and in a senior quality assurance role to support successful delivery of projects and operational services involving medical devices IT. For innovation activities the post-holder may serve as a design and compliance engineer for the development of novel medical devices, and as a collaborator in clinical research involving medical technology.

NUH, formed by the merger of Queens Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital in 2006, is a major NHS Trust providing acute and specialist healthcare services to the region. Its Clinical Engineering Department (part of the wider Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering service) is one of the largest in the country, offering a diverse range of medical device related services both to the Trust and external customers. Clinical Engineering are seeking to recruit a senior clinical engineer in support of medical device IT activities across the Trust.

  • Engineering & /or information technology relevant undergraduate degree with postgraduate qualification (or equivalent)

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£41.90 for enhanced and £21.90 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
