We have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the team in Liverpool. As the first institution of its kind in the world, dedicated to education and research in tropical diseases, it’s an exciting time to join LSTM as we enter our 125th anniversary year in 2023.

The position will be based within the Departments of Tropical Disease Biology at LSTM. The Department of Tropical Disease Biology (TDB) is a leading national and international research and teaching department with a focus on translational research of tropical infectious diseases.

Primarily the successful candidate will be required to perform research on an AMS Springboard Award. This is a laboratory-based role establishing organ-on-a-chip and organoid models of human skin and kidney to investigate tissue damage by snakebite. The post holder will work as part of a collaborative research group, supporting a diverse research portfolio.

Key responsibilities are (but not limited to):

• Establishment and experimental manipulation of human skin and kidney organ-on-a-chip and organoid models: Independently establish and maintain organ-on-a-chip and organoid cultures; Design and carry out experimental work involving organ-on-a-chip and organoid models; Perform gene engineering on organ-on-a-chip and organoid models using CRISPR/Cas9 technology.
• Omic data collection and analysis: Collect samples and complete transcriptomics and proteomics for different experimental conditions, this also includes management of the resulting large data sets and statistical comparisons.
• Development of projects; Co-ordinate and participate in weekly group meetings and present updates in the project to the wider research group; write drafts and edit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals; support the collaborative working of the Centre for Snakebite Research and Interventions.
• General Laboratory duties: Responsible for ordering project laboratory supplies; Identify and report project risks and opportunities; Comply with good working laboratory practices and health and safety regulations and assessments.

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format. You will also demonstrate:

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., Biotechnology, Molecular Biology)
• Evidence of scientific independence and leading on publications
• Molecular biology laboratory training
• Experience with either organ-on-a-chip or organoid cultures and experimentation, a minimum of at least mammalian cell culture experience
• Attention to detail and accuracy, leading to high quality control of research data
• Highly developed analytical skills
