Our National IT teams support Aldi by delivering our system and infrastructure needs. In this vital, hands-on role, you'll provide first and second-level support. Plus, you'll make recommendations to improve what we do – testing new and existing programs as needed. You're a specialist after all.

We are looking for an experienced Network Engineer to join our National IT Department on a 12 month fixed term contract. As a Network Engineer you will work as part of a team in order to run the assigned department efficiently and accurately, and achieve compliance with all internal and external guidelines and regulations.

There will be a need for a mix of hands-on support of network infrastructure as well as liaising with our external service providers and International colleagues.

Your New Role

  • Take a lead role in the day-to-day operations of all network technology (LAN/WAN/WLAN) across 13 Regional Distribution Centre’s and over 1,100 Stores
  • Create and execute rollout plans in conjunction with International IT, regions and external suppliers as needed
  • Document existing business processes and workflows
  • Identify and implement improvements to processes in consultation with the National IT Manager
  • Ensures compliance with legal obligations and regulatory standards
  • Provide technical support to National IT Technicians as required
  • Provide second and third level support to Regions and stores including the escalation of any issues to external support partners when necessary
  • Prepare communications to the business as required
  • Test hardware and program updates to verify whether newly implemented requirements and existing functionality operate without errors
  • Provide the National IT Manager with accurate forecasts of spend within the area of responsibility
  • Co-ordinate and direct consultants, contractors, vendors and suppliers as required, including the raising of Purchase Orders for Goods and Services
  • Make recommendations to the National IT Manager on new technologies
  • Manage system maintenance which will occasionally fall outside of normal business hours
  • Support and maintenance of systems, conducting daily checks to ensure seamless operation
  • You will also be required to carry out any other duties requested of you by your direct line manager


About You

  • Experience of vendor management, especially Service Delivery
  • Previous experience coordinating external and internal resources that are carrying out design work
  • Ability to coordinate external and internal resources conducting testing, as well as carrying out testing of all changes to the network (including software updates, hardware changes and configuration changes)
  • Experience of planning network upgrades and new network deployments
  • Installation, maintenance and configuration of routers, firewalls and switches experience
  • Experience of zoning concepts (e.g. DMZ)
  • Experience configuring and maintaining VPNs
  • Project coordination experience
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, network administration supporting core business environments
  • Conceptual knowledge of Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies such as routing, MPLS and SD-WAN
  • Conceptual knowledge of Network Firewall technologies, especially Fortinet Fortigate
  • Working knowledge of Local Area Network (LAN) Technologies, especially Juniper and Cisco Meraki
  • Working knowledge of Wireless LAN Technologies, especially Extreme Wi-Fi (formerly Zebra / Motorola) and Cisco Meraki
  • Knowledge, or experience, of managing Wireless LANs (e.g. co-ordinating installations, high-level understanding of planning coverage, understanding of SSIDs and authentication methods)
  • Creation and maintenance of supporting processes and documentation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to effectively prioritise and execute tasks while under pressure
  • Keen to take ownership and responsibility while working effectively within a team
  • Logical and efficient, with a keen attention to detail
