Human Nature is looking for Communication & Engagement Assistant to join the team at its office in Lewes, East Sussex. This is an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic and hardworking people to join a fast-growing and ambitious organisation.

This is a diverse and wide-ranging role, suitable for someone who both enjoys working closely in a team but is also capable of operating independently. The ability to manage time well, juggle multiple tasks at once and react to new information is essential. This is a role suited to someone early in their media and communications career who is full of energy and ideas, and is keen to learn quickly and gain hands-on experience.

Human Nature is a purpose-driven business, creating remarkable places to live that help to regenerate local communities and the planet. Our first project, the Phoenix neighbourhood in Lewes (in planning), is a 700 unit urban extension that will transform a neglected brownfield site into one of Europe’s most sustainable neighbourhoods, provide training and jobs and transform the public spaces and amenities for the local community.

What we are looking for
An opportunity has arisen for a full time (37.5 hours) position to support the communications, engagement and Social Imagination team around engagement of the wider community in activities in and around the Phoenix neighbourhood.

  • Excellent written communication skills including spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Experience and proficiency in Google Workspace, presentation software (such as Pitch.com, Powerpoint or Keynote), social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin) and Mailchimp. CMS, Adobe Indesign and Photoshop experience helpful, but not required (training will be provided)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • An interest in, and a good eye for, visual design, photography and video
  • An interest and experience working in media, communications or journalism
  • A warm and confident manner with the general public is key as is flexibility to work occasionally for a few hours at the weekend and evenings on public engagement events (time off in lieu will be available).

Role responsibilities

  • Proofreading and assisting with the drafting of articles, press releases, newsletters and other media (including award submissions, posters and leaflets).
  • Planning and scheduling social media, including managing the social media calendar and preparing posts in multiple social media formats
  • Preparing presentation materials for events and exhibitions, working to a brief and a set of brand guidelines
  • Supporting communications for public events, walks, talks, festivals, food and music events, assisting with design of assets and potentially taking photographs and video
  • Assisting with the management our information email and inquiries from members of the public and other people wishing to get in touch with Human Nature
  • Assisting with the set up of small internal events and supporting hospitality on open evenings and larger public events (requiring occasional evening work); meeting and greeting guests, the general public and stakeholders
  • Larger events preparation and support, sourcing and booking materials or suppliers, as well as attending the events and helping guests to feel comfortable
  • Arranging and managing printed assets, and brochures for events

The team and working environment
Human Nature is a small, closely knit team who are passionate about our mission and purpose. We work hard but our colleagues are important to us and we enjoy spending time together, with time for team lunches and social time built into our weeks.

To maximise collaboration across our small team we encourage regular presence in the office. While some flexibility to work from home may be considered in the future, you should expect to be in the office every working day when you start, so please ensure you can travel to Lewes easily. We are happy for the hours to be focused within the school day.

You will be working closely with and reporting to the Communications Manager and Head of Social Imagination. This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about communications and media, planning, local politics, events and cultural programming. An interest in sustainability and climate is essential.

Practicalities
Salary is £23,000 full time (37.5 hours)
